The GSi performance version of Vauxhall’s Insignia saloon will hit UK roads in March, starting at £33,375.
Available as a hatchback or an estate, the newcomer is advertised as the fastest Vauxhall ever to take on the notorious Nürburgring.
Power comes from a choice of 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines, both of which transmit their output to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Officially, the petrol engine – a turbocharged four-cylinder affair that produces 256bhp – is the fastest, offering a 6.9-second 0-60mph time and a top speed of 155mph.
No performance figures have been released for the diesel version, which shares the petrol’s asking price but boasts 50 fewer horsepower, despite having an extra turbocharger.
But while the diesel may not be as potent as its petrol counterpart, it’s set to offer slightly more fuel economy. Official consumption figures are yet to be announced, but the petrol’s 197g/km emissions suggest a 33mpg thirst, while the diesel’s 192g/km emissions hint at around 39mpg.
Whichever version you end up with, though, you’ll get much the same equipment. External touches include the 20-inch alloy wheels, chrome air intake surrounds and sporty bumpers, while the cabin benefits from leather-trimmed sports seats, a head-up display and an eight-inch touchscreen navigation system.
The GSi also comes with a FlexRide drive selector system, which offers four different driving modes. Each tunes the car’s four-wheel-drive system, gearbox, steering and suspension to suit the selected conditions.
