£70k price tag for 503bhp Alfa Romeo Stelvio QV

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio QV is now available to order, with prices starting at £69,500.

Under the bonnet, the Stelvio gets the same 2.9-litre V6 engine as the Giulia QV. Developed by Ferrari, the twin-turbo unit develops 503bhp, which is enough for a 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 176mph.

In comparison, the recently revealed Jaguar F-Pace SVR has 542bhp, but it’s half a second slower to 62mph.

Obviously, then, the Alfa’s performance isn’t all down to brute force and ignorance. The QV model also boasts a specially tuned gearbox. As in the standard car, it’s an eight-speed automatic, but it’s tuned to switch between ratios in just 150 milliseconds.

The Stelvio QV uses Alfa Romeo’s clever Q4 four-wheel-drive system, too. Under normal circumstances, the on-board computers send all the power to the rear wheels, but, if the car senses a loss of traction, it can redistribute up to half the power to the front wheels.

Alfa has given the Stelvio QV a look to match the power, with a sporty bodykit, 20-inch alloy wheels and a sports exhaust setting it apart from the everyday SUVs.

Inside, meanwhile, the QV model gets another race-derived makeover, with Alcantara on the seats and carbon fibre on the dashboard.

There’s a host of driver assistance technology, too, including the DNA Pro switch, which allows the driver to change the suspension, steering and throttle settings to suit the road conditions. More safety-orientated gizmos include autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning.
